Life at THM

Ian Ireland

Senior Associate

Why THM?

I decided to join THM as I was attracted by the opportunity to work on some of the largest financial restructuring transactions in Europe and the breadth of experience I would gain from being part of small project teams leading these transactions.

Prior to joining THM I was at PwC where I started on the graduate scheme in international tax structuring before moving to the M&A transfer pricing team. I wanted to get to know the businesses I was working on in more depth and thought this was more likely to be achieved working at THM.

My THM experience.

Since joining THM in 2015 as an Associate I have worked on a number of projects in the UK and Ireland, including projects in our Value Delivery service line which involves helping clients to maximise value on their investments. On all of my projects I have had regular contact with senior management and exposure to board level decision making, which has been a great experience for me in terms of seeing how boards think about risk and strategy.

I’ve covered sectors including retail, real estate development, financial services and healthcare. No two projects are the same and my roles have included cash flow forecasting, investment appraisal, leading refinancings, estate optimisation modeling, preparing board reports and advising boards through the restructuring process.

With the varied range of projects I have been involved in I am always learning, and I’m lucky enough to work directly with some of the most highly respected people in the industry which is fantastic for my personal career development

How do I manage the work life balance?

It can be difficult sometimes when in the midst of a transaction or in the lead up to a project deadline but no more than might be expected, and outside of these times my colleagues have been relaxed if I want to work from home or leave early on a Friday to catch a flight for a weekend getaway.

I find exercising helps to clear my mind and often my colleagues will also double up as running buddies when working away from home.

Other information about me

I enjoy visiting places I haven’t been to before and try to get away on weekend trips as often as I can. I also enjoy playing pretty much any sport which involves a ball.
